ABSTRACT

Homeless families with children are now among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population. This chapter focuses on the Women's Residential and Counseling Center (WRCC), a transitional living center for homeless women with or without children also operated by the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. The concept of the failure of romantic relationships as a cause of homelessness among women has morphed more recently into a concern with the very high rates of domestic violence perpetrated on homeless women. Several of the women in the first group seemed almost consumed by a sense of entitlement and enraged by the thought that "society" was somehow taking better care of homeless men. Case managers' notes yielded data on women's fertility histories including, critically, data on children from whom the women were separated. Many of the women at the WRCC are victims of domestic violence and the facility's location is common knowledge.
