ABSTRACT

Since PPC is built on the basic values of caring for and helping one another, staff members should be fully committed to the caring process. If adults are not interested in young people but are concerned only with overpowering and subduing them, a positive culture will be much more difficult to establish. Unfortunately, many adults have come to believe that to show concern for students is to weaken adult authority. PPC does not call for soft, maudlin caring. Rather, staff are asked to invest themselves fully in helping youth to develop their potential. Often caring will be shown best when staff place strong positive expectations upon youth. This kind of caring enhances rather than weakens the influence of the adult.
