ABSTRACT

Forms of power can be distinguished according to the value upon which power is based. The concept of power is perhaps the most fundamental in the whole of political science: the political process is the shaping, distribution, and exercise of power. Influence over power on the basis the people refer to as councilor ship. One of the most important forms of influence based on respect is charisma: the veneration accorded a leader may give him even the power of life and death over his followers. Control over power on the basis of wealth is ecopolitical power, exemplified in the purchase of votes or office. The concepts of influence and power are extremely general, and have reference to a wide range of interpersonal relations. Practices with regard to moral values may also be subject to the exercise of power. Bargaining and rationing are practices with regard to wealth in situations of choice and coercion, respectively.
