ABSTRACT

The herald of the new knowledge is none other than Google, the famous Internet search service, which after some fumbling about has admirably taken the principled position of refusing Chinese censorship. What is clear, and brave, is the fact that Google took the position that it was better for the Chinese to have a censored Google in China than none at all; but after hackers, almost certainly linked to the Chinese government, stole data about Gmail accounts of human rights activists, Google struck back. “Google is good at innovation, and when it leaves, the rest of the companies in China will lack motivation,” Zhang Yunquan said. Actually, Google has only been active inside China since 2005–6, and only between one and two percent of its net revenues come from China, despite the fact that China has 400 million Web users and even more potential customers in its nascent mobile phone business.
