ABSTRACT

Gide was never altogether satisfied with the lecture he gave on Théophile Gautier at the Vieux-Colombier Theater in April 1914. Perhaps this explains why, instead of publishing it at the time in his own N.R.F., he held it over and allowed it to appear in November 1917 (when the N.R.F. had suspended publication for the duration of the war) in the first issue of Les Ecrits Nouveaux. Yet, although he re-examined from time to time his harsh judgment of Gautier simply because it was at variance with the accepted opinion, he never could change his mind on this score.
