ABSTRACT

Many teachers will already possess a great deal of the necessary information as a result of their own training and teaching experience. However, they must ensure that they are technically accurate and up-to-date in their approach; for instance, it would now be ‘oldfashioned’ to cite the use of fish-plates between lengths of railway line as a precaution against the effects of expansion. Science and technology have now become ‘popular.’ Scientific facts and applications which have previously been the preserve of the enlightened are now common knowledge amongst children. This means that the pro-

grammer can no longer rely solely on the standard text and reference books as sources, but must look elsewhere for the latest findings and applications. To this end it is recommended that the intending programmer should maintain an up-to-date card index system, containing references and snippets of information which he may come across in his day-to-day reading and conversations. Such an index system will form an invaluable source of readily available information, which can be used in the preparation of both lessons and programmes.
