ABSTRACT

As soon as they have learned to walk, the small children of Átány begin to wander about in the street on sunny days and look for other children of the same age. Those of the same neighborhood or the same zug find each other very soon, and the more there are, the better they like it. They spend all day playing in the sand or a grassy ditch. At this age boys and girls play together, and there may be age differences of up to three years in a group. They are called “small friends,” small koma-s, and the whole group is a “small band.” Some families prefer to keep an eye on the little ones, so they invite the whole band in off the street to their yard. Y oung lambs, dogs, and cats are given the children, who caress them, and tumble about playing with them.
