ABSTRACT

Sacred sites offer believers the possibility of communing with the divine and achieving deeper insight into their faith. Despite the fact that there many interfaith dialogue groups are operating in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict context, a few of them have taken concrete actions to protect the sacred sites. Hebron is sacred site in this conflict whose symbolic meaning has been manipulated by Israeli—Jewish settlers and rightwing government leaders to sabotage Israeli–Palestinian peace accords. Sharing access to the sacred and holy places in Israel–Palestine is the key to any sustainable political agreement between the Arabs and Jews in this region. Any exclusive claim on the entire area of holy places serves as a fuel to the violent conflict. The destruction of the holy places in Palestine and Israel should be viewed within the larger context of the wars between Israel and Arab states as well.
