ABSTRACT

In April 2002, the International Movement for a Just World (JUST) launched a global campaign for the protection of places of worship. It is against this backdrop that JUST campaigned to persuade the United Nations to "adopt an international convention on the Protection of Places of Worship. In the course of the discussions with officials at the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, JUST realized "that it would be more feasible to table a Resolution on the protection of places of worship at the UN rather than solicit support for a Convention. Besides, the adoption of a Resolution on the protection of places of worship could well be the foundation for the UN to work upon a comprehensive Convention at a later date. Unfortunately, the attempt by the Malaysian Government to elicit support from all the ASEAN states for a UN Resolution on places of worship did not succeed.
