ABSTRACT

Each of the sense modalities responds to a range of different stimuli, and it is frequently of interest to know how sensitive the system is to diverse kinds of stimulation. We may ask, for example, what amplitude of vibration applied to the fingertip feels as strong as a given vibration applied to the arm? Do all the colors of the rainbow look equally bright? When they are produced with equal intensity, do all the notes of an organ sound equally loud? What concentration of sucrose tastes as sweet as a given concentration of fructose? Those and a host of similar questions compose the queries to which intramodal matching gives answers.
