The career of Colonel House was like that of an actor or of a singer in that there is no record left by which posterity can form an independent estimate of his worth. There are to be sure some memoirs, some letters and some papers. But no one who knew the Colonel will make the mistake of thinking that they reveal the man or define the part he played in the history of these times.
