ABSTRACT

In the town of Emporia in the State of Kansas there died on Saturday one of the most widely beloved Americans of our time. Yet for nearly fifty years he said what was in his mind so that none could misunderstand where he stood on the greatest issues which have aroused our people; and again and again he was a crusader for his convictions. It was not then by hiding his opinions for fear of offending those who disagreed with him that he won and held the affectionate confidence of men and women in every walk of life and of every faction and every sect.
