ABSTRACT

The self-conception is far from clear since it consists of a rather vague historical self-assertion. In comparison with their orientations toward the natural and artificial environment, and in comparison with their emphasis on the "self," the cultural elaboration of the concerns society is very great and easily noticeable among Mazahuas from El Nopal. Society in both its associational and its communal versions, is always present in the conversations of Mazahuas from El Nopal. Moralistic approach to society is so prevalent among Mazahuas from El Nopal, they do have a few explicit generalizations about society as well, and some rudimentary sociology of both the "pure" and "applied" types. In order to understand the complexities of their social identifications, one has to emphasize the fact that the Mazahuas from El Nopal do not identify themselves as Indians. They have neither solidarity with the indigenous population of Mexico, nor much knowledge of the number, distribution and characteristics of this population.
