ABSTRACT

The signal event in Mack Henry Jones's professional life and the centerpiece of his legacy is the period in which he chaired the Political Science Department at Atlanta University. The political science department was at the centre of the Atlanta African Liberation Support Committee. During his tenure as chair Mack secured Ford Foundation funding to begin a doctoral program with the black political experience at its centre that encouraged development of a black perspective on political science. Mack's willingness to serve National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS) has been manifested at all levels including stints as section chair, panel organizer, panelist, featured speaker, committee chair and council member. The symposium was organized to honor Mack in an NCOBPS setting on the eve of his retirement. Perhaps Mack Jones's most important work is "A Frame of Reference for Black Politics," which appeared in Linneal Henderson's early collection on black politics.
