ABSTRACT

The fortunate fact that America is culturally as well as politically federalistic rather than nationalistic gives every group a chance to contribute its inherited traditions to the common stock of American and humane civilization. The majority of the millions of Jews in this and other lands may devotedly accept the traditions of historic Judaism. Only a relatively negligible number have done so because they have been converted to Judaism rather than because they were born in Jewish families. Our natural allies, not only in this country but throughout the world, are those who still believe in individual freedom and the toleration of conscientious differences of opinion. Those who wish all Jews to unite on their proposed platform have the right and perhaps the duty to try by legitimate reasons to persuade them. Anyone, however, who tries to accomplish this end by any other force or device, in disregard of the conscientious differences amongst citizens, is an enemy of liberal civilization.
