ABSTRACT

The special articles consist of an account of the fifty years’ history of the Central Conference of American Rabbis by Rabbi Philip-son, population statistics of Jewish communities in the United States by Dr. Linfield, and five biographical sketches devoted to the late Cyrus Adler, Alexander Harkavy, Abraham H. Friedland, Harold Hirsch and Isador Sobel. The Advisory Committee, appointed by the American Jewish Committee, realized this and urged that a number of sample censuses be taken in different parts of the country to serve as checks or controls on the various estimates and indirect methods used by those reporting to Dr. Linfield. It ought to be added that the American Jewish Committee, the Conference on Jewish Relations and the Jewish Community of Minneapolis each contributed $500 to make a house-to-house canvass of the Jewish population of that city.
