ABSTRACT

The study of Farewell rehab wards was focused initially on the way in which the patients cope with their life situation. More important to an understanding of Farewell Hospital and its rehab program, however, are the details of patients' activities and relationships and the manner in which these are evaluated and controlled by the rehab staff. Physicians on other services sometimes refer promising cases to rehab for consultation. Other patients are sent to the prosthetic clinic run by the rehab staff to obtain a prescription for an apparently needed prosthesis or appliance. The selection of about half of all the patients taken on the active rehab unit is carried out in a weekly line-up where the rehab director or one of his senior physicians looks over the patients who were admitted to Farewell Hospital during the previous week or so.
