ABSTRACT

The rehab unit shows the most activity of any ward in the hospital. In order to understand the daily life of the patients somewhat better, it is useful to know what the daily round of the rehab unit is like and what some typical patterns of patient activity are. Just as in our larger society, the social rewards of Farewell patients are not distributed evenly, but depend on the patients' place in the "status system" and on their ability to exert control over those who serve them. A few patients spend a relatively large amount of time parked in a wheelchair in the corridors outside the rehab unit. A few patients sleep until a later time, and some until breakfast. Late sleepers include patients who are able to take care of their own personal needs and choose to let the washing-up go until the last minute, and those who need almost complete nursing care.
