ABSTRACT

In the glass images the creating Spirit blows through the church interior and joins the figurative and literal signs from the world of modern life—including the traffic realm—together with Christian symbols, words, and architecture. Johannes Schreiter's image creatively provokes believers to at least try the reversion of traffic. In the place where the gothic window usually situates the divine mystery— that is, at its upper arc—Schreiter inserted the simple text "Follow me" and surrounded it with a traditional floral decoration. As only few theologians have done, Schreiter meets the challenge of late modern culture and the "Spirit of believer's time," taking seriously its depth by placing cultural changes within the horizons of history and faith. Even in Traffic, the literal version of which flows around, touches, and transports all of believers once stepping out the door, the artist does not shy away from this challenge.
