ABSTRACT

At the beginning of December 1921, Hrach embarked on an Italian ship for Brindisi, on the Adriatic coast, at the same time as Aram Yerganian. Arshavir and Yezid were the last to set out, on a cold February day, from the maritime station at Galata, on a Romanian ship going to Constantza, the huge Romanian port on the Black Sea. Shahan Natali simply suggested that Yerganian follow him on a discrete pilgrimage to Tehlirian's house, and, to reconnoiter the ground, to go by Uhlandstrasse and in front of Jemal Azmi's closed store. Arshavir and Yezid arrived on February 25 by night train and stayed at the Hotel Minerva just long enough to locate a room in the city. Patriarch Zaven gave Arshavir a passport in the name of Souren Ghazarian and 500 Turkish pounds for his passage to France and then the United States, as his mere presence endangered the rest of the Armenian community.
