ABSTRACT

There are people and organizations that consider freedom of speech an absolute value and reject any sort of restrictions that limit it in any form. Courts and legislators at the various levels—federal, state, and local— make and rule on laws that can either enhance or limit freedom of speech. The Supreme Court is the highest authority in the interpretation of the Constitution, as well as the reconciliation of different values protected by governmental decree that have come into conflict with each other. Freedom of speech often comes in conflict with the interests of the country's defense and security. TV companies, radio, and newspapers are all involved in censorship, every day. Comics have always been at the heart of censorship attempts by many groups, mostly parents and educators. Big business also exerts attempts to censor information and speech. Free speech is a cornerstone of the American experiment.
