ABSTRACT

The analysis of the politics of the Jews must in large part deal with Jews as leftists. There is an element in the ambivalent relationship between contemporary left ideologies and movements and the Jews. The links of Jews to the left in Europe affected the political behavior of those who emigrated to America. Russian Jews exhibited their strong support for Israel publicly in many ways. Israel has never been able to become part of the Afro-Asian world, although it has succeeded in establishing strong links with many countries in black Africa. The most important political event affecting Israel in Western politics in recent years has been the rise of the New Left. The New Left, particularly since June 1967, has identified Israel with the American Establishment. The split between the Jews and the Negroes, which has affected attitudes toward Israel, stems much more from the American situation than the Middle East conflict.
