ABSTRACT
By evening, the first American tanks had arrived at Buchenwald. Our leaders greeted the Americans at the gate and showed them around. Satisfied that the Underground was firmly in control of the camp, the Americans left for Weimar to continue their military operations. It’s important to stress that, contrary to popular opinion, it was the Underground, and not the U.S. Army, that liberated the camp (see figure 1).
