ABSTRACT

By the early twentieth century, The Wealth of Nations was widely recognized as the systematic study of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services, with market analysis a central theme. Social science today is usually seen as a series of academic disciplines between the natural sciences and the humanities. Any contemporary enumeration of the social sciences must include economics, political science, and sociology. Sociology emerged out of social philosophy during the last half of the nineteenth century. Political science emerged gradually out of political philosophy during the nineteenth century. By the early part of the twentieth century, there was a body of knowledge about the behavior of people in governmental contexts which supplemented the more general ideas of theorists. Economics, sociology, political science, psychology, anthropology, and history became disciplines through their recognition by institutions of higher education. Universities have long been organized into departments, and advanced training is guided by the faculty of a particular academic department.
