ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the Louis and Mary Leakey and the dawn of humanity. Louis Leakey's childhood was spent mostly in Kenya, where his parents were Anglican missionaries. He was born on August 7, 1903, at their mission station, which was little more than a clearing in the forest north of Naroibi. For several years Louis divided his time between work in Kenya and further studies and writing at Cambridge. Louis and Mary Leakey confirmed their personal partnership on December 24, 1936, in a simple ceremony in an English registry office. Though working primarily as a field archeologist, Mary Leakey also had other important interests, especially the study of African rock paintings. Louis and Mary Leakey had three children. These sons—Jonathan, Richard, and Philip—became integral parts of the Olduvai crew. In their work, Louis and Mary Leakey did a thorough job of documenting all their discoveries.
