ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about Gunnar and Alva Myrdal. During a vacation, three students were on a bicycle trip through central Sweden. On June 5, 1919, they stopped at the farm of Albert Reimer, who allowed them to spend the night in his barn. Gunnar's self confidence may have shown a temporary pause when he first met Alva, but her obvious interest spurred him on. To her he seemed knowledgeable about everything, and she was eager to share in his genius. To him she seemed to be an unusually well-read young woman, and soon they were talking about contemporary novels and evolutionary biology. Gunnar Myrdal found himself bored by his early work as a lawyer, and he considered how his talents might be better served. An article that Gunnar wrote in 1932 titled "The Dilemma of Social Policy" summed up his views on the need for economics to move beyond its classical traditions to welcome broader efforts at social engineering.
