ABSTRACT
At the Olympic Games of 165 a.d. a Cynic philosopher (cf. p. 174), Peregrinus, ended his life with a flamboyant suicide. If he meant to make headlines he certainly succeeded: contemporary writers discussed his death, and it was still worth mention even two hundred years later. In the guise of a letter to a friend Lucian gives what purports to be an eyewitness account.
