ABSTRACT
Lucian’s gods come not from Greek religion but from Greek literature and art. The actions and mental attitudes they reveal in his pages are based on the verses of Homer and Hesiod and their physical appearance on the celebrated statues turned out by Greek sculptors in the fifth and fourth centuries b.c.
