ABSTRACT
Another pattern of behavior which involves both individual and social dynamics is authoritarianism. Like criminality and neurosis, this complex syndrome apparently has its roots in a peculiar imbalance of power among the id, ego, and superego. Its functioning is largely uncon scious and central to a wide variety of overt behavior, such as prejudice, rigid conventionalism, submissiveness to superiors, punitiveness, and other manifestations which wi l l be explored in this chapter. Essentially, authori tarianism is conceived as a failure in development, but it is thought to be fairly common in our society, even among so-called normal people.
