ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the third way of extending the Perspective, achieved by either seeking new theoretic links or further shaping established ones. This is labelled as theoretic elaboration. The first two are primarily inductive, whereas the third is primarily deductive. Linking these three avenues of extension, as a common denominator, is the process of concatenation. All three forms of the serious leisure perspective are evident in the question of the leisurely nature of shopping. Agreeable obligation and leisure combine when shopping for, say, a dress for a special reception. When contemplating (reflecting) people keep in their thoughts the dominant activity of the moment. Informal observations suggest that contemplation comes in at least four types: obligatory contemplation, casual leisure contemplation, serious and project-based leisure as contemplation, and contemplation as serious leisure. To underscore and study the positive side of emotion and other personal states, a new field known as "positive psychology" has emerged within the discipline of psychology.
