ABSTRACT

COMPARISON OF GROOMING AND PROXIMITY For most females, the primary associates revealed by the proximity

analysis were the same males with whom they groomed most often. This overlap is illustrated in Figure 4.3, which identifies the females’ primary and secondary grooming partners with solid and cross-hatched bars, respectively. For 27 of the 29 anestrous females (93%), the P partner ranked either 1 or 2 on C score, and for 16 of the 20 females (80%) who had secondary grooming partners, that partner ranked either 1 or 2 on C score. If we turn the comparison around and instead determine how the males who ranked 1 or 2 on C scores ranked on ad lib grooming, the results are very similar.
