ABSTRACT

This part conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters. The part presents some issues that are relevant for development policy and indicates lines of inquiry and approaches to providing that information at the macro level for Tanzania and the micro level for Jamaica. The need for creating employment and income-generating opportunities for a rapidly growing population and labor force, especially in urban areas, is among the most serious development issues—one that is serious in both industrial and developing countries. Possibilities for creating employment are very much tied to global development issues—the availability of investment funds, trade restrictions and comparative labor costs, which also contribute to the flight of jobs. For growing numbers of women, an economic contribution is essential for the maintenance and survival of their families, either because of the low earnings of the spouse or other family members, or because the women themselves are heads of households.
