ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the status of black women in education using demographic and some social indicators to understand what progress has occurred during the several decades. It provides a review of the data reveals that the educational trends for black women are quite similar to those for black men. The data trends for black men are even more distressing. The most important comparisons are between black women and white women and men because these data offer a more comprehensive picture. In the move towards educational equity, comparisons should be made with those who experience the least amount of discrimination—white males. The data are taken from reports published by the National Center for Education Statistics, the Census Bureau, and a variety of educational organizations. In cases where the specific data on black women was not available, statistics on blacks in general were used.
