ABSTRACT
The roiling of protest and change in the 1960s bought into play skeptical citizens of various ages who began to associate science with nuclear warfare. Kubrick’s 1964 film, Dr. Strangelove, symbolized the mood of deepening disillusionment. Two celebrated California savants knew from their universities that a New Age generation needed reminders of the blessings of wonder and curiosity underpinning science and technology.
