ABSTRACT

We really moved up. After Man and Beast and The Cultural Drama, Ripley’s office assigned us larger and higher space. “SI T-550”— meaning tower on the fifth floor of the Castle—afforded dramatic vistas of the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial beyond, and what was to become the South Quad’s voluptuous Victorian garden. The 25-by-25 room (625 square feet), with a ceiling height of twelve feet, served as a platform for our business: to excite curiosity, to connect intellectual dots, to give taxpayers a return on their investments in a part of the knowledge industry.
