ABSTRACT

Contemporary socialism has great trouble in attaining a clear consciousness of the conditions of its new juridical life. Before 1878 great efforts were made to leave the realm of utopia and advance toward practice; one relied heavily on the progress of the associations of production to resolve the social question. The advanced republicans in France do everything they can to prevent the people from acquiring the knowledge of socialist ideas; they monopolize the popular universities, flattering the instincts, and wanting everywhere to declaim against the bourgeois who do not fulfill their social duties. The profits that are made by crew-chiefs dealt with by contract with the landlords are considered by many socialists as thefts. This sentiment of a rather primitive order is found as strong in the agrarians as in the workers. Sometimes the German lords raise themselves to conservative socialism of the highest level.
