ABSTRACT

The Judaism of most of the Munich Jews was satisfied with the fact that as such, they were neither religiously, nor philosophically, nor politically oriented, possibly with a charitative bent, if that. Almost 25 percent of the Jews of Munich were of East European descent. The unity of Judaism would be confirmed and reestablished if that reconciliation could be effectuated by a future scholar. As Rabbis Mordecai M. Kaplan puts it, Judaism is not a religion, like Presbyterianism or Lutheranism; the Jewish people have a religion. The Judaism of the Cahnmann family remained rustic, folksy, and good humored, sentimentally attached to family and community, but without Jewish learning. The Forest Hills Jewish Center is nearly orthodox on Shabbosim while resembling Reform on Rosh Ha Shanah. Things are not essentially different in Jewish organizational life. Salo Baron once characterized American Jewish life as "chaos, loosely over-organized."
