ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Index of Urban Status (IUS) and also describes the terms of actual social and economic characteristics. In the Index of Urban Status, seven of the dimensions used in the original Index of Kansas City Status have been retained. The IUS can also be used more objectively by averaging the several part-scores to obtain a total score. The IUS educational status scales for men and women have been designed to take these factors into account, and thus they differ considerably from the education scales developed by W. Lloyd Warner, Hollingshead and others. Including the religious affiliation scale in the IUS gives an additional weight to community participation and formal affiliations. The IUS occupation status scale reflects several assumptions about the relationship between occupation and social status which are not always incorporated into other occupational scales. Educational background influences adult life status somewhat differently from other variables measured in the IUS.
