ABSTRACT

The Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM) affirmed that, at that moment, the character of the Spanish Revolution was democratic-socialist and that, to push it forward, the Workers' Alliance was necessary. The POUM did not affiliate with the Comintern or the movement for the Fourth International, but, described by Maurin, and maintained its membership in the so-called "London Bureau". The London Bureau would play a role of some importance in relation to the POUM during the Spanish Civil War. The Spanish Revolution is a revolution of the democratic-socialist type. The POUM was too new on the scene, and the Ethiopian war too far away. Events in Spain, on the other hand, were out of the ordinary: a scandal exploded, known as the "estraperto" affair, connected with bribery in the licensing of slot machines. The Socialist executive answered immediately, publicly supporting the activity of the POUM in the national People's Front, in the name of the other members.
