ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a conceptual investigation into the notion of equity and how it intertwines with equality in the context of international development work in the area of gender and education. It explores different approaches, understandings and definitions of equity. The chapter analyses how certain notion can be explicitly and implicitly understood in institutional narratives by different actors. It discusses the case study of a project that supports women's and girls' education. The chapter presents an example of what is concretely at stake in the (non-)distinction between equity and equality. Equity can also be described using different theories and theoretical vocabularies, each shedding a specific light on the concept. One common definition of equity used in the field of gender and development is anchored in the analytic distinction made within feminist theory between "sameness" and "difference". The chapter concludes a series of considerations for program planning, monitoring, and evaluation, which can help to better articulate claims to equity and equality.
