The Titanic was the last stand of wealth and society in the center of public affection. The public depended on socially prominent people for all the vicarious glamour that enriches their drab lives. One of the Titanic legends originated when a romantic Canadian lady, whose husband remained on board, told a reporter: "What we remember was that as the ship sank; we could hear the band playing 'Nearer My God to Thee. The game of lawn tennis was played in California as early as the 1880s. After the defeat of Mexico in 1848, California was ceded to the United States and taken into the Union in 1850. Members of the California Tennis Club competed in the East as early as the 1890s. The first club member to rank in the First Ten was C. P Hubbard, who ranked tenth in 1892.
