ABSTRACT

The problem of amateurism was one of the main reasons for forming some sort of official organization to regulate the game internationally. Since the United States National Lawn Tennis Associ-ation (USNLTA) had not yet agreed on a definition of amateurism at their annual meeting a month earlier, they sent no official delegate to Paris. While the 1914 meeting of the USNLTA had come to an agreement on the definition of amateurism, the issue was to plague the amateur game for over half a century. The final decision on this fateful move was to be made at the annual meetings of the USNLTA in New York City the following February. The challenge round at Forest Hills was one of the more memorable in Davis Cup history. Californians took all the honors at the first National Championship to be held at Forest Hills, in 1915. After beating Williams in a five set semifinal match, Billy Johnston beat Maurice McLoughlin in the finals.
