ABSTRACT
Important research generated by Jackson Katz in his work of "Crisis, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity" attempts to dissect the modern twenty-first century male. Males need to understand the value and significance of community building and how people are all interconnected. Sports can be used to connect lifelong values which illustrate the importance of why schools should sponsor athletic programs for students. Practicing core principles teaches children the values of hard work and discipline. Sports provide an outlet for children, allowing a controlled and positive release of energy at the simplest level when the focus is on recreation. Recreational activities help children develop healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. A wounded spirit can be caused by many things, but it often results from experiencing some kind of tragedy, violation, hurt, or disappointment. Healing a wounded spirit takes resilience on the part of men and understanding that the situation does not have to be permanent.
