ABSTRACT

The lack of general acclaim of this writer-artist annoys a lot of us who think that most of the big popular hot shots in the out-of-doors field can’t figure in the same league with him. One prominent publisher—and the book was issued by another house—was vehement in his disappointment over the way Santee’s Cowboy flopped. “It should have sold at least fifty thousand!” Ross’ Horses and Men is just as good, and for sound reasons. He knows what he is describing, most of his yarns being sprung from actual experiences. The story of “With Bated Breath” was told him by a cowpuncher with whom he worked years ago in Arizona. The Ole Man of the tale, he worked for. The action took place in the Pleasant Valley country, and is still remembered by a lot of the old-timers around there.
