ABSTRACT
Following its investigation, the Education Department found legacy preferences to be legal because minority alumni children expected to increase in number over time benefited in admissions to the same extent as white alumni children. As an advocate of replacing race-based affirmative action with a class-based version, Kahlenberg was not particularly concerned about the significant boost athletes received in admissions, because their success was based on their own hard work, not on their family connections. Concerned about the economic future of the United States and also about the well-being of Americans who were less fortunate than themselves, a significant number of privileged students in Ivy League institutions have also become angry. Student protests did not cease with the end of the Vietnam War, but shifted, with the introduction of the all-volunteer Army, from opposition to the military and foreign wars to protesting against economic inequalities and low pay for service workers.
