ABSTRACT

This chapter describes that unchecked population growth is as critical as any problem facing mankind today. Until recently, the author believed the control of nuclear weapons to be even graver. However, he hopes that the use of these weapons can be prevented, but the world cannot hope to escape a tremendous increase in its population. The wellbeing of mankind depends upon both weapons control and population. The work of population stabilization, after all, is very new. Recognition of the problem is steadily increasing where it was hardly mentioned—or even thought about—a generation ago. Now, more and more, concern is mounting and population is being discussed by public officials, religious leaders, and private citizens in many parts of the world. The immediate problem is to increase the food supply to meet rising population even while stabilization programs are being developed. Until population is stabilized, every increase in food production is an important holding action.
