ABSTRACT
As a result of the widespread replacement of coal gas by natural gas, public gas supplies in many countries are now free of toxic carbon monoxide. This detoxification of the gas supply constitutes a powerful natural experiment since poisoning by gas has been a frequently used method of suicide.
