ABSTRACT

A major issue in suicidology is assessing the degree of intent to die in suicide attempts. The method used for suicide has been proposed as one clue for the degree of intent to end one's life. While the method for suicide can be a measure of intent, the location selected for suicide, whether it be a living room, workplace, hotel, or a remote area in a national park, can also indicate the intent to die. Suicides happening away from home include those within the area of residence as well as ones outside the area of residence. The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) provides an opportunity for fine-tuning this aspect of the opportunity theory of suicide with respect to location. Social strain measures encompassed a variety of constructs, including deaths, economic strains, legal strains, and strains in social relationships. Psychiatric morbidity was measured by a series of eleven variables available in the NVDRS.
