ABSTRACT

Suicides make many choices, from writing a suicide note, choosing a place to die, and a method to use, to how they will dress and whether they will drink alcohol or take drugs prior to their suicide. In today's world, there is much focus on the role of Internet and websites such as Facebook and Twitter in shaping suicidal behavior, but media in past eras also shaped suicidal behavior. In the past, novels, plays, operas, and newspapers have played a role in helping suicidal individuals stage their suicides. Every suicide has to choose a method, time, and place for their act, as well as how to dress and whether to leave a suicide note. Women were found to be more likely to choose to die by suicide at home than were men. This may help to explain the gender gap in suicide. Data from suicides in Grand Canyon National Park indicate that this location qualifies for a suicide hot spot.
