ABSTRACT

The suicide leaves a body, and this communicates information to the individual's loved ones and bystanders. This chapter explores the choices made by the suicidal individual in how they present their body. On rare occasions, suicides write a suicide note on their skin. Demirci, reported on two cases of suicides by hanging in Turkey who had written on their bodies. Van Brunt and Lewis have explored why rampage murderers in the United States dress the wear they do. They noted that rampage murderers are often characterized by misogyny and objectification of the targets that they seek to kill. They typically wear black, olive and camouflage clothes that are easily available in stores and online. Some suicides are naked when they die. Simon presented three cases of patients who hung themselves while in a psychiatric hospital or at home and who were naked when they died in this way, but he was unable to provide any reasons for their nakedness.
